TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme Opportunity

Other

Germany

Based on the agreement with The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in De-veloping Countries (TWAS), the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Founda-tion) draws the attention of researchers at German research institutions to the possibility of inviting early-career researchers of all disciplines from sub-Saharan African countries to spend three months at their institution in Germany for the purpose of research and cooperation.

The DFG pays the host institution a monthly lump sum of €2,350 to cover the guest’s maintenance costs and visa expenses. In addition, the guest’s flight and rail costs to and from the institution are re-imbursed up to an amount of €1,350. The host institution can receive up to €700 per month in funding to cover direct project costs such as material and laboratory costs.

The requirements for proposal submission on the part of the visiting researchers are as follows:

  • They must be from a sub-Saharan African country
  • They must be engaged in research activity at a university or research institution in a sub-Saharan African country
  • They must not have obtained their doctorate before the year 2018. Visiting researchers with children must have obtained their doctorate no earlier than two years earlier per child (maxi-mum six years in total).
  • They must not be currently engaged in any activity in Germany or ongoing research with the host institution.
  • The DFG funding instrument Initiation of International Collaboration is available for repeat stays, especially with the aim of developing joint research projects (see link under “Further In-formation”)

Proposals must be submitted to TWAS by visiting researchers by no later than 6 September 2023. The proposal must also include an official invitation issued by the host institution that specifies the research topic of the cooperation (not a project proposal) and contains information on the infrastruc-ture that will be made available to the guest.

Prior to extending the invitation, hosts are asked to ensure that scientific cooperation with the guest offers sufficient potential. In the case of approval, the host institution is to support the visiting re-searcher in organising their stay, for example in booking flights and finding accommodation.

The DFG explicitly welcomes proposal submissions by researchers of all genders and sexual identities, from different ethnic, cultural, religious, ideological and social backgrounds, at different career stages, types of higher education institution and research institution, as well as by researchers with disabilities or chronic illnesses.

Departmental Lunch Seminar: Apolitical vs Political Consumerism: Associating citizens’ political identities during the 2023 Okaku regional council and Keetmanshoop Rural Constituency by-election Social media campaigns

| Southern Africa Workshop

ABSTRACT: Political digitalisation may empower political parties and voters to mobilise, campaign and convince their electorates to cast their votes in large numbers during any elections time. Lately, social media and other online platforms became heaven for political consumerism, identity conceiver and mobilisation efforts around the globe, particularly in Namibia. However, equating the voter turn-out with crowded campaigns/gatherings during the run-ups of the recently held Okaku regional council and Keetmanshoop Rural Constituency by-election results shows a regressive political winning tendency for some parties and associations. The purpose for this seminar is to present an analysis of how online politics, apolitical and political consumerism influence the voting behaviours of the electorates in the local authorities’ campaigns and elections in Namibia.

Reimagining Education Conference

| Global Conference

April 27 – 30, 2023 | 8:30 am ET | 14:30 CET | 18:00 IST

Join this emergent movement and be inspired, build relationships, and tap into deep imagination.

Together, we’re re-imagining what learning can be.

We are many, coming from different places and paths.

The Re-imagining Education Conference (REC) is an annual 4-day long intensive online conference, bringing people together across geographies, knowledge systems and experiences. The abundance of tools and knowledge shared in the conference also reverberates in our micro conferences happening every two months throughout the year in a more intimate setting.

REC is organized within and throughout the large web of the Ecoversities Alliance, a coalition of educators, of learners, practitioners, communities, weavers, and dreamers from a plurality of worldviews, backgrounds, and experiences.

Over the past 2 years, the conference has brought together over

2000 people, 280 contributors, and more than 50 organizations from 6 continents.

Through the conference, our hope is to make space for questions to surface and relations to emerge and strengthen.

  • How can we learn from “other worlds” to enrich all our worlds?
  • How can we listen to what is alive and emergent and integrate it into our daily practices?
  • How can academics nurture and be nurtured by nonconventional spaces that are re-imagining education and life?
  • What if our places of learning oriented away from learning about the world in order to act upon it, to learning to become with the world around us?

What questions will you bring?

  • § des items pour évaluer les compétences langagières des processus cognitifs : Identification des mots, vocabulaire, compréhension en lecture et orthographe ;
  • § des items pour évaluer les compétences en numérative des processus cognitifs : calcul mathématique, mesure et résolutions de problèmes ;
  • § des items pour évaluer les connaissances dans les domaines de la citoyenneté, de la santé, de l’environnement et du développement socio-économique ;

Educationist John Samuel has contributed exceptionally to public life and the well-being of society at large as a leader at the heart of South Africa’s educational development over his lifetime.

Between 1965 and 1975 he was a teacher, education administrator and policy specialist, working in the secondary and post - secondary school systems in Zambia, England, Ghana and Nigeria. In 1979 he was appointed as the Executive Director the Southern African Council of Higher Education (SACHED). SACHED developed into one of the most innovative and pioneering independent education organisations in the country in the 1980s. Building on its long and successful legacy of developing alternatives to apartheid education, SACHED pioneered new developments in such areas as publishing, distance education, mass education through the newspaper, tutorial and support work for students.

As a result of this work, he was approached to head up the ANC’s Education Department during the transition years, playing a critical role through the establishment of the Centre for Education Policy Development and Constitutional working committee in mobilising education research for change and drafting the education clauses of the Constitution.

Between 1994 and 1997 he was appointed to the first Nelson Mandela government Education Department as DDG for Education Policy and Planning, in which capacity he again played a key role in mobilising research forces and crafting new legislation to sweep away the apartheid inheritance. From 1997 he became active in the work of the Kellogg Foundation, with which he developed a programme for rural education.

From 2000-March 2006 he was appointed Chief Executive to the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Under his leadership the foundation commissioned three major national studies that influenced policy development in this country and internationally, including Emerging Voices (2003-2004). This dealt with the critical challenges of rural schooling. The work resulted in the former Minister of Education setting up a rural school forum to develop strategies to tackle these challenges. He founded the Centre for Memory that became the Nelson Mandela Archives. He also launched the 46664 Concerts, a global platform for a major Aids Awareness Campaign, harnessing the commitment and interest of popular musicians and singers from around the world.

John Samuel is a person whose contribution to education in South Africa over time has been exceptional and deserves recognition. Please attend his lecture.
