Bahir Dar University: Celebrating sixty years of promoting and supporting Adult Learning and Education programmes in Ethiopia

Bahir Dar University established in 1972 and located in the Amhara region of Ethiopia has emerged as a leading academic institution of higher learning in Ethiopia, contributing to the intellectual and socio-economic development of the country. It continues to foster academic excellence, research, and community service, making a positive impact on the region and beyond.

On June 11, 2023, Bahir Dar University celebrated its Diamond Jubilee, marking its 60th anniversary. As one of the largest universities in Ethiopia. It accommodates over 50,000 students.

During the grand ceremony, Bahir Dar University honoured DVV International for its exceptional contributions to the growth and success of the Adult Education Department. The event celebrated the remarkable achievements of the university since its founding. The recognition certificate was presented to Mr. Eshetu Abate, the Country Director of DVV International Ethiopia, by His Excellency Adam Farah, the Deputy President of the ruling Prosperity Party and Chairperson of the Bahir Dar University Board. The certificate was presented in “recognition of outstanding support to the growth and success of the institution.”

The celebration saw the participation of numerous guests, including university presidents from other Ethiopian universities, federal government officials, the Deputy President of the Amhara region, international guests, ambassadors, and education attachés. DVV International was also represented by Dr. Bernd Sandhaas, the former Regional Director for the East and Horn of Africa, who has been a strong supporter of ALE in the region for many years.
