Community education emerges out of people’s experiences and social interests generated within communities. Community Education enables democratic agendas to emerge at local levels to challenge and eradicate oppression linked to exploitation, marginalisa-tion, cultural dominance, powerlessness and violence.

This is a workbook for community learning groups. This workbook has stories and activities that can support groups to explore issues around access to energy in working class communities.

The workbook has been written by the Community Education Programme (CEP) for use by Community Investigators from Missionvale, Veeplaas, Zwide and Soweto-on-Sea.

This booklet contributes to the increasing body of literature, documentaries and popular texts which call for the development of a heightened consciousness about the ecological crisis and the devastating destruction of the Earth and all its life forms.

This article will explore one of the intricate issues that we consider and deal with in our work: the issue of knowledge. Our work in the Community Education Programme is part of a broader research and development programme into post-school education and training at the Centre for Integrated Post School Education and Training. It looks to create the practice and theory necessary within a participatory curriculum for community adult non-formal education.

At the Mass Education Event I walk with a man through the poster exhibition, and we look at the pictures that so starkly represent the community in which he lives.

Our research question was: How can public adult learning centres be transformed to offer learning opportunities throughout life that play a role in youth and adults organising themselves to work together, to provide social support, build unity, claim their rights, develop their community and transform society?
