This June, as communities around the world celebrate World Localisation Day, we at MOJA are really inspired by the global effort led by Local Futures. They have a series of free online events throughout the MONTH of June. These events offer many useful ideas on how local living is growing in different places – from Mexico's busy groups working on local food and farming, to changes in education in Brazil and India, and new ways of doing business in Australia.
These events highlight efforts from all over the world, and they link very well with many things happening right here in Africa. For a long time, African communities have practised local ways of living, building strength through traditional farming, education led by the community, and lively local economies. The problems we face, like climate change and making sure everyone has enough food, show us even more how important and wise it is to make our local systems stronger.
Imagine how the talks on "Reclaiming Education as a Path to Economic Transformation" on June 15th could help and inspire our own efforts to make education more relevant to African ways of life and local knowledge. Or how the ideas from Mexico's local farming movements could start new conversations about traditional farming methods and food independence across our continent.
These global discussions are powerful reminders of the good things that come from focusing back on what's local – building stronger communities, looking after our unique cultures, and creating a future that is fairer and lasts longer. We encourage you to explore Local Futures' World Localisation Day events. See them not just as chances to learn from others, but as a starting point for discussions and actions that help our own African communities do well.
Let's look at these global stories and get ideas for how we can keep supporting and growing local efforts across Africa, making sure our special contributions to a more local world are seen and celebrated.
